How to Avoid Rental Scams When Searching for a Home in Central Indiana

Searching for a rental home online is easier than ever, but unfortunately rental scams are becoming more common, especially on social media platforms. Scammers often copy legitimate listings, pretend to represent real property management companies, and try to collect deposits or personal information from renters. If you are looking for homes for rent in Kokomo, Fishers, or Central Indiana, knowing the warning signs can help you protect yourself while searching for your next place to live.

Facebook Marketplace Is a Common Place for Rental Scams

One of the biggest places where scammers target renters is Facebook Marketplace, along with personal Facebook profiles and local housing groups. Many scammers copy photos from legitimate listings and repost them as their own, claiming they are the owner or an agent managing the property.

In some cases, scammers even pretend to represent real companies to gain trust. Some individuals have attempted to pose as agents from CRM Properties while advertising homes that we do not actually have listed.

If you see a property on Facebook Marketplace, in a rental group, or posted by a personal Facebook profile claiming to represent a rental company, be extremely cautious. Scammers often copy legitimate listings and photos from real websites to make their posts appear trustworthy. Just because a property exists online does not mean the person posting it is legitimate, which is why it’s important to verify who you are communicating with before sharing information or sending money.

Always Verify the Official Website

A key step in avoiding rental scams is confirming that the property is listed on the company’s official website. Fake listings often direct renters to unofficial websites or ask them to apply through random links.

For CRM Properties, the only place to apply for one of our rentals is through our official website: crmproperties.net. If a listing does not lead you there, it may not be legitimate.

When searching online for Kokomo property management companies, Central Indiana rental homes, or apartments for rent in Kokomo, always double check that you are using the company’s official website.

Never Send Money Through Payment Apps

Another major red flag in online rental scams is when someone asks you to send money through personal cash transfer apps. Scammers frequently request deposits through services such as:

• Venmo
 • Cash App
 • PayPal
 • Chime
 • Zelle
 • Facebook payments

These payment methods offer very little protection if you send money to a scammer.

At CRM Properties, we will never collect security deposits, application fees, or any other payments through these apps. All payments are handled securely through our official website and systems.

Be Careful of “No Screening Required” Rentals

Another warning sign is when someone claims no credit check, no background check, or no rental history is required. While this might sound appealing to some renters, legitimate property management companies in Kokomo and Central Indiana follow a screening process for every applicant.

If someone offers you a rental without verifying credit, background, or rental history, that is a major red flag that the listing could be a scam.

Watch for Prices That Are Too Good to Be True

Scammers often advertise houses for rent in Kokomo or Central Indiana at extremely low prices to attract attention quickly. They may also pressure renters to send money immediately to “hold” the property.

If the price seems far lower than other rental homes in Kokomo, Indiana, or if someone is rushing you to send a deposit right away, take a step back and verify the listing before sending any information or payment.

When in Doubt, Verify the Listing

Rental scams can happen to anyone, especially when scammers copy legitimate listings and pretend to represent real Kokomo property management companies. Taking a few minutes to confirm the listing can protect your money and personal information.
